This week, Phipps Conservatory unveiled its new Exhibit Staging Center and with the help of Nextek, it has become one of only 15 certified Living Buildings in the world! The Staging Center is 100% off-grid. Generating all of its electricity through a solar panel array tied directly into Nextek’s DC Micro-Grid technology. In most solar-powered buildings, the direct-current (DC) from the photovoltaic panels is converted into alternating current (AC) – the kind that comes from standard wall sockets – and then converted back into DC for most devices. That process can waste up to 15 percent of the electricity. At the Staging Center, with the implementation of Nextek’s DC Micro-Grid, everything will be DC, saving that power and storing it into batteries for use at night and in emergencies.
